Butterfrog Farms Fermented Pepper Sauce is made in small half-gallon batches and is assigned a heat level of 0-10 with 0 being no heat and 10 being extremely hot. We grow and ferment the peppers, leeks, and garlic at our farm in rural Madison County. The brine ferments are mixed with vinegar and lightly seasoned with cumin, dill, basil, oregano, thyme, and curry depending on the series. The primary pepper used in each batch is listed under the series name on the bottle.

Bananphibian (heat level 0-1, mild) – Our mildest sauce is the “Bananphibian” series made from no heat or very low heat peppers like Banana, Bell and Shishito. Try it as a condiment, mix it in to your deviled egg yolks, or add it to any dish for a tangy fermented pepper flavor without the burn!

Smoke & Honey (heat level 1-3, mild/medium) – “Smoke & Honey” is a limited run sauce made with smoked Morita peppers that have been infused with Madison County honey from Ridgeline Honeys. The base pepper varieties are no/low heat peppers such as Banana, Fresno, Shishito and Red Jalapeño. It has a pleasant smokey flavor with a hint of sweet, very tasty on grilled meats and veggies!

Toasty Tadpole (heat level 2-4, medium) – If you like a medium heat our “Toasty Tadpole” series comes in Jalapeño, Fresno, Poblano and other low heat peppers. Great as a condiment for burritos, sandwiches, and eggs or is a great way to spice up your guacamole!

Fire Toad (heat level 5-7, hot) – We hear many folks say they like a lot of heat but still want flavor. If that’s the case for you then you will love our flagship “Fire Toad” series. This is our most popular sauce series for a reason and comes in a variety of primary pepper flavors such as Cayenne, Habanero, Sugar Rush and Scotch Bonnet. Peppers used rate from 30,000 to 400,000 Scoville heat units. Try it on tacos, chicken, fish, or a bowl of chili!

Inferno Frog (heat level 8-10, very hot) – And finally, we have the “Inferno Frog” series which we classify as very hot to extremely hot. We think it competes with the hottest sauces on the market and is made from peppers that rate from 400,000 to 2,200,000 Scoville heat units such as Ghost, Scorpion, 7-Pot and Carolina Reaper. A bottle of this sauce will last a long time and is made by heat-addicts for heat-addicts. If that sounds like you then you’ll love the taste as much as you love the burn!

I’m a full time farmer and part time musician. I started growing peppers and making my own hot sauce in 2021. My first career was an electrician but as our sauce became more popular we decided to jump into farming full time in 2024.
